Marfa, Texas

Marfa was just like what everyone said it was going to be - an offbeat, funky small town in the middle of no where. It definitely marches to the beat of it’s own drum. The town is on a tourist schedule so most places are only open Thursday-Sunday, so stick to weekend travel if you are planning a trip.

What had planned to be a quick 2 day trip in Marfa, turned into over a week long stay. We arrived just as COVID started to spread in early March. The town turned into a bit of a refuge for us during the early days. By the end of the week, almost all spots had shuttered, with a few restaurants offering take out. Seeing this quiet town that was so far away from any largely populated town or city begin to shut down made COVID all to real for us.

But our week + stay in Marfa made us feel like we got to know the town and the people. The residents are friendly and gracious. Every shop or restaurant we visited resulted in long talks with the owners or employees. The close knit community was appreciated, especially for us, at such an uncertain time. Once our travels resume, we look forward to returning to this wild west Texas town.

EAT:

The Sentinel - our morning spot for coffee, breakfast burritos, and internet. We often returned later in the day for a beer. They also have a great little shop filled with handmade ceramics, baskets and things you didn’t know you needed. Also don’t miss Sotol - similar to Mezcal but only made in small batches in certain regions of Mexico (one being the Marfa area).

Marfa Burrito - all you need is a burrito.

Food Shark - a stationary food truck with the famous marfalafel.

The Water Stop - more tasty breakfast.

DO:

You can walk through all of Marfa in a day or so. But you definitely will want to pop into every shop.

I loved every store in Marfa and if we weren’t in an airstream with limited space, it might have been trouble.

Wrong Store - part gallery, part store

Raba Marfa - home goods and vintage finds

Garza Marfa - textiles and furniture that I’ve envied for years

Ranch Dressing - hats and textiles. What more do you want?

Marfa Store - a collection of goods made in Marfa

Marfa Soap Company - handmade soaps that smell like pure relaxation.

Uncut Moonstones - crystals galore.

See Marfa Mystery Lights!

Visit Prada Marfa, Little Target, and all the galleries which we sadly missed as they were all closed due to COVID.

SLEEP:

Hotel: El Cosmico, Hotel George, Thunderbird

Camp: Marfa Lights Viewing Area - free camping!
